The commitment
From every jewellery set sold, £5 is donated to Florence Ellen Research.
From every other sale, online and across our Spoonflower fabric and homeware collection, 10% of profit is donated to Florence Ellen Research.
This is calculated on profit, not on the sale price, because that is the honest figure: it is money genuinely left over after making, printing or sourcing each item, not a headline percentage that quietly assumes our costs away.
What Florence Ellen Research actually funds
Florence Ellen Research supports high quality, innovative research into burns and wound healing through small, targeted grants. It is named after Florence Ellen, a nurse who spent more than twenty years caring for children with burns.
The grants are deliberately modest and specific. Rather than funding a project's entire cost, they exist to give early stage or innovative research enough to get properly started, generate real preliminary evidence, and use that to go on and secure larger funding from bigger institutional funders. This is sometimes called pump-priming: a small, well-placed grant that makes a much larger grant possible afterwards. It means a relatively modest amount raised through Botanicals & Company sales can genuinely help move a piece of research from an idea into something fundable at scale.
I am founding Florence Ellen Research myself, and want to be upfront about that rather than present it as a long-established institution. It sits alongside, not instead of, our support for the wider work discussed in our News announcement, and reflects a genuine, personal interest in this area of medical research.
Where the money comes from
- Jewellery — £5 from every set sold, launching via our online shop.
- Online sales — 10% of profit, once our WooCommerce shop (launching soon) is live.
- Fabric and homeware — 10% of profit from our Spoonflower collection, starting with our Lavender pattern.
How the numbers add up
None of these are high-margin sales, so no single purchase raises very much on its own. The point of a running commitment like this is that it compounds over time. As an illustration, on jewellery sets alone:
| 100 sets sold | £500 donated |
|---|---|
| 500 sets sold | £2,500 donated |
| 1,000 sets sold | £5,000 donated |
The 10% profit contribution from other sales adds to this on top. None of these figures are a promise or a target; they simply show why a modest amount per item is worth doing properly and keeping up, rather than treating it as a one-off launch gesture.
How and when we pay it
Payments to Florence Ellen Research are made quarterly, within 30 days of the end of each quarter: January to March paid by 30 April, April to June by 30 July, July to September by 30 October, and October to December by 30 January.
How we'll report this
This matters enough to us that it isn't going to be a line mentioned once at launch and then quietly forgotten. Paying it quarterly, on the schedule above, and keeping this page updated as we do, is a genuine priority for Botanicals & Company, not an afterthought. In keeping with how the rest of this site tries to handle claims, a giving commitment is only worth making publicly if we are also willing to be checked against it, so we intend to publish a running total of funds donated and update it after every quarterly payment.
