From this quarter onwards, 10% of Botanicals & Company’s proceeds will go to Florence Ellen Research, an independent grant-making initiative I am founding to support research into burns and wound healing.
Florence Ellen Research supports high quality, innovative research into burns and wound healing through small, targeted grants. It is named after Florence Ellen, a nurse who spent more than twenty years caring for children with burns, and it exists because that kind of care deserves research behind it that keeps pace with it.
The grants themselves are meant to be independent, targeted and practical: funding early stage and innovative research with genuine potential to improve outcomes for patients, awarded carefully rather than spread thinly, and judged by whether the work actually advances healing, reduces suffering and improves quality of life, not simply by how it reads on paper.
Why this, and why now
I am founding Florence Ellen Research myself, and I want to be straightforward about that rather than present it as an established institution with a longer history than it actually has. It is a genuinely new, independent effort in a field I care about, and I would rather build it properly and honestly from the start than dress it up as something it is not yet. From now on, 10% of Botanicals & Company’s proceeds, across the site, will go to Florence Ellen Research.
How the payments actually work
To keep this honest and checkable rather than a vague promise, payments will be made quarterly, within 30 days of the end of each quarter:
- January to March, paid by 30 April
- April to June, paid by 30 July
- July to September, paid by 30 October
- October to December, paid by 30 January
We intend to publish a running total in due course: a giving programme is worth stating publicly only if we are also willing to be held to it.
Florence Ellen Research is still launching
Florence Ellen Research’s own website, florenceellen.co.uk, is still being built and is not yet fully live. We will update this page with more detail, including how researchers can apply for a grant, as that develops.
